Summer 2023 Staff Awards

Summer Camp closed on August 5, 2023, and the staff celebrated with the traditions of “MegaClean” (yes, deep cleaning EVERYTHING), staff banquet served by the Camp Greenville Board of Directors, staff awards ceremony, staff video, and closing thoughts with slow songs. Congratulations to the annual summer staff award winners!

Chad Fossen Award
(formerly the “Rookie of the Year” Award)

Presented to Harry Jarman (Adventure Cabin Leader from Australia) by Executive Director, Cory Harrison.

Mr. Chad Fossen was presented with the Camp Greenville “Rookie of the Year” award in 2022, following his first season as the Food Service Director. Sadly, Chad passed away in the spring of 2023, and his spirit is honored through the renaming of this award.

The Chad Fossen Award is presented to a first time Camp Greenville staff who quickly embraced and embodied the culture and mission of camp and exceeded all expectations by their contribution to the camp community and continuously putting campers first.

Harry is from Busselton, Western Australia, a small town 3 hours south of Perth. He is attending an engineering course for University, although he also has an interest in teaching. Harry loves singing, playing piano and bass guitar. He served as an Adventure Cabin Leader this summer.

Greg McKee Award

Presented to Jacob Skelton (Ropes Team from New Zealand) by Director of Camping, Jenna Johnson.

Mr. Greg McKee served as the Camp Greenville director from 1990-2010, leading camp through a period of growth in enrollment, adventure programs, and mission impact. Greg is beloved by generations of camp alumni and he continues to serve as a volunteer, mentor, and inspiration.

The Greg McKee Award is presented to an outstanding international staff member that exemplifies our Camp Greenville goal of providing safe, fun, magical experiences for children by putting campers first through our core values, as well as leaves a positive footprint on camp through their cultural exchange.

Jacob is from Upper Hutt New Zealand. He attended St Patrick’s College Silverstream and graduated last year. He enjoys hunting, fishing, diving, and traveling around New Zealand. He served as a Program Team member, specializing in Ropes this summer.

Monk Mulligan Award

Presented to Abbey Waldrop (D2 Division Leader, from Greenville) by Director of Camping, Jenna Johnson.

Mr. Monk Mulligan served as the Camp Greenville Director from 1944-1967. Alumni remember Monk for not only his leadership of camp, but moreso his interactions with campers, particularly related to ping pong competition. The “Monk’s Old Timer’s” honor is bestowed upon campers to attend camp for at least 5 years.

The Monk Mulligan Award is presented to an individual who relentlessly pursues the little things to make sure that campers are always put first. Every single day and every single decision is to keep Monk’s vision alive of serving children and allowing a camper to learn and grow and be impacted far beyond their week at Camp Greenville. This individual embodies what is means to live and perform out the “Camp Greenville spirit”.

Abbey Waldrop was a camper for 2 years and this was her 3rd year as a staff member at Camp Greenville. She’s from Greenville, SC, and attends Brevard College in Brevard, NC. She is double majoring in Wilderness Leadership and Psychology. Abbey enjoys outdoor activities, reading, and spending time with friends. She served as the Division Leader for Division 2 this year.

Uncle Johnny Holmes Award

Presented to Ms. Rita Long (Kitchen Staff) by camp’s Senior Leadership Team: Jenna Johnson, Cory Harrison, Nicholas Patton.

John M. “Uncle Johnny” Holmes served as General Secretary of the Y beginning in 1914 and continued as Camp Director through 1944. He saw camp through massive transitions from offering camp at its past location near Blythe Shoals to securing the land of Standing Stone Mountain for Camp Greenville’s current location between 1921 and 1925. Camp Greenville simply would not exist without the service, vision, and hard work of Uncle Johnny Holmes.

The Uncle Johnny Homes Award is presented for outstanding long term service to Camp Greenville.

The award is presented this year to Ms. Rita Long (known only to staff and campers as “Miss Rita!!”). Year after year, Miss Rita welcomes campers and staff to the dining hall with a smile, a wave, and a warm heart. Upon receiving this award, Miss Rita commented to the entire staff: “Don’t worry. I’m not done yet. I’ll still be making jello next year” (her specialty!).

Sudie Mulligan Award

Presented to Luis Mendez (Kitchen Staff) by Director of Operations, Nicholas Patton.

Sudie Mulligan served camp as a cook, nurse, naturalist, and female role model to all the boys (at the time) of Camp Greenville, during her husband Monk Mulligan’s tenure as Director from 1944-1967.

The Sudie Mulligan Award is presented to the Support Staff Member best exemplifying Sudie’s passion for supporting camp's mission through dedication and collaboration behind the scenes.

Luis Mendez is from Xalapa Mexico and celebrated his 3rd year as a Camp Greenville staff member in 2023. He is earning his Masters degree in Specialized Foreign Trade Administration from Universidad Veracruzana.
