PACC: Lifelong Friendships at Camp

Camp is more than just a place to try new activities, explore the great outdoors, and create unforgettable memories—it’s also a unique opportunity to build lifelong friendships. There’s something special about spending days filled with adventure, laughter, and teamwork that creates strong bonds between campers. If you’re heading to camp this summer, here’s why it’s the perfect place to make friends and some easy ways to start conversations with your fellow campers.

Why Camp Friendships Last a Lifetime

Shared Experiences– Whether it’s conquering a ropes course, canoeing on the lake, or sitting around the campfire, shared experiences bring people closer together. These moments create a strong foundation for lasting friendships.

A Supportive Environment – Camp Greenville fosters an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to be themselves. It’s a place where differences are celebrated, and friendships can flourish.

No Distractions – Without the constant pull of social media and technology, campers focus on real conversations and connections, which strengthens their friendships in a way that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Cory Harrison, Vice President of Overnight Camping, shared the following email with camper parents last summer:

“This is going to come across as a completely random thought first thing in the morning (when I'm writing it), and it is, but here it goes anyway:

People are talking to each other so much less. Including me and probably you?

So here is the bad news and the good news.

The Bad News

The Good News

  • The average camper at Camp Greenville spent or will spend (when they come) over 540 minutes a day talking and hanging out with friends.

Camp Greenville is all about human connection. Every day, we build containers for connection. We create a space for kids, adults, and a sort of adults—that we call adults at camp—to talk with each other, play with each other, laugh, and connect in increasingly uncommon but insanely invaluable ways.

At Camp Greenville, campers learn invaluable lessons that help them navigate the world around them. These lessons are often unique and quite different from their everyday experiences. One of the most important skills they develop is learning how to communicate effectively with one another.

So, I wanted to say thank you for entrusting us with your children's growth and development this summer.”

Ways to Make new Friends at Camp

Making new friends at camp doesn’t have to be intimidating! Here are some simple ways to break the ice and start meaningful conversations:

1. Ask About Their Favorite Camp Activity- A simple “What’s been your favorite part of camp so far?” can spark a fun discussion and help you find shared interests.

2. Join Group Games – Whether it’s a game of a friendly soccer, or a card game in the cabin, participating in group activities is an easy way to meet new people and bond over a shared experience.

3. Compliment Something – Noticing and complimenting a fellow camper’s cool water bottle, a fun t-shirt, or impressive archery skills is a great way to start a positive conversation.

4. Share a Fun Fact – A lighthearted “Did you know?” or “Guess what?” followed by an interesting or funny fact about yourself or something camp-related can be a great conversation starter.

 5. Be Open and Friendly– A simple smile and a “Hey, want to sit together?” can go a long way in making someone feel included and appreciated.

Embracing the Camp Spirit

The best part about camp friendships is that they’re built on shared joy, teamwork, and the excitement of discovery. Be open to meeting new people, step outside of your comfort zone, and embrace every opportunity to connect with your fellow campers. Before you know it, the people you meet this summer might just become friends for life!
