Airnasium Upgrades
Our beloved gathering space at the center of camp, the Airnasium, was built more than 70 years ago, and was ready for an upgrade!
This winter/spring, it’s receiving new custom flooring, basketball hoops, new roof and decking, new camp post office inside, redesigned drainage to handle the rainiest days, and a fresh coat of paint.
The Airnasium serves as a critical indoor/outdoor space to shelter campers during inclement weather, such as the afternoon showers and thunderstorms that visit our mountain range each afternoon of the summer. The expansion of accessible entrances and overall usability of the Airnasium through this remodel will allow easier and safer access for all campers, as well as provide expanded “indoor” program areas, allowing us to serve more campers overall.
This project has been funded thanks to the Ramak Foundation in honor of Mr. Rick Bearss, who passed in June of 2022. Rick was a generous supporter of camping, both nationally and specifically YMCA Camp Greenville for many years. Mr. Bearss has not only funded capital projects including camp’s outback village, but also funded many programmatic elements like the Leadership Development Program and scholarships. Rick is deeply missed, but his legacy lives on through his family, the Foundation, and this Airnasium upgrade project.
Additional funding support has been provided by YMCA of the USA’s national grant program that supports capital improvement projects to expand accessibility in camps. The new decking will include adequate ramps for wheelchair use, improved entranceways, and other mobility-minded improvements.
Construction is being complete by First Victory, based in Brevard, NC.
The project is expected to be finished by April 2023 to be enjoyed by campers this summer!
